Commissions - Paintings Made to Order!

A commission can be a wonderfully collaborative effort if you like, or a delightful surprise if you prefer a more hands-off approach. Whatever your personality, I strive to make it a special experience in which you feel comfortable, informed, and confident that your custom artwork will be crafted with care and sensitivity. You will walk away with a piece as unique as you; one that captures your vision, immortalizes your memories, and continues to bring joy for decades to come.

1. Discuss and Plan

Let me know if you are interested in a commission! I offer no-obligation consultations in person, by phone, or even via email, to discuss your desired painting. Things to consider are:

  • what size (small, medium, large) or shape (square, rectangle, horizontal or vertical orientation) do you envision your painting?

  • is it destined for a specific space? If so, are there particulars we need to plan for such as colour scheme?

  • do you have a specific reference photo in mind to use, or do you require me to search for suitable images?

  • what is your timeline?

2. Digital Mock Up

Once I have the best photographic reference(s) provided by you, or sourced by me, we determine the ideal format (shape and size) of the painting. For the above example, there was just one reference photo, though sometimes multiple photos are required. Using these images, I create a digital mock up of the painting for your approval (mock up fee starts at $30). The mock up is cropped according to the format on which we have decided. Extraneous background elements are removed, and different backgrounds or details are added. The goal is to provide you with an image that best approximates the painting I will create. There is opportunity for your input and I can tweak the mock up as necessary until we arrive at an ideal reference image.

3. Final Painting

When you approve the mock up, I send an invoice for a deposit on your painting (mock up fee + 30% of painting). I then purchase supplies and create your custom art piece. If it’s a big project I can send you progress report(s) and photo(s) as I develop the piece, if desired. When the work is complete, I send a photograph of the painting for your approval. Once approval is given, we arrange for the collection or shipping of the painting and I invoice you the balance owing. I only ship or hand over the final piece when the balance is paid. I include a Certificate of Authenticity with your painting.

Materials

My support of choice is professional grade gallery-wrapped canvas, 1.5” deep. I paint the image all the way around the edges, creating a clean, modern look that renders the purchase of a frame unnecessary. If you have a specific frame you want to use, I can paint on board sized to fit into your frame instead of the gallery-wrapped canvas. I use high quality acrylic paints that are fade-resistant. I coat the work with clear, protective, UV-resistant varnish (typically matte).

Pricing

Please contact me to request the current price list. I charge according to painting size and complexity. To create the digital mock up, my fee starts at $35, and an additional $35 per/hour rate is applied if the mock up is overly complex. If you choose not to move ahead with a custom painting, only the mock up fee will be charged. I require the mock up fee plus a 30% deposit to be paid before I start purchasing supplies. Finally, the balance is due upon collection of the art, or we can arrange a monthly payment plan to be paid as I am working on your piece.
